Subsidized Senior Housing
69Subsidized Senior Housing
When senior citizens retire, their income level usually drops off significantly. For many seniors, the only source of income may only be social security payments. These meager payments may not be enough to cover senior citizen’s rent if they are still living in rental units. In cases like this, seniors can move to subsidized senior housing. Subsidized senior housing is just housing for seniors in which the rent has been subsidized by the government. With the government paying part of the rent, seniors can more easily pay their rent.
Seniors that want to apply for subsidized senior housing should do so through HUD. HUD manages the money that goes toward subsidized housing. HUD should then give you a voucher which you can use at where they are accepted.
Although the government helps pay for part of the rent you are still responsible for the rest. Since different housing complexes charge different rents, you could still end up being over your budget. Make sure you do some calculations first and figure out how much you can afford in housing. Most experts recommend that your rent be 1/3 of your income.
There are many places you can search for subsidized senior housing. If you go to housing search websites, you should be able to specify what type of housing you’re looking for and the area you’re looking in.
There are also people who specialize in helping others find rental housing. Usually they are free to you because they get a commission from the housing management for referring renters to them.
As a senior, you want to find a place that is senior friendly. Finding subsidized senior housing with good management is important. For example, good management would mean they respond to calls for repairs quickly. Some housing complexes take days or never even come when tenant’s request help. You may not be able to tell how well management treats the residents, but you can look up reviews online for that subsidized senior housing complex. If you see a pattern of negative reviews, then scratch that place off your list. You want to find a good senior housing that you can retire to without worries.
